Professor Xu Guoqi Receives David H Y Chang Professorship in Chinese History at The University of Hong Kong
Tigillus Foundation is proud to announce that Professor Xu Guoqi has been named the recipient of the David H Y Chang Professorship in Chinese History at The University of Hong Kong (HKU). This Endowed Professorship marks a significant milestone in the Foundation’s continued dedication to advancing Chinese historical studies in an ever-changing world.

Established through a generous gift from Mr David H.Y. Chang, Founder of the Tigillus Foundation, the prestigious Endowed Professorship in Chinese History is designed to recognise distinguished scholars who contribute substantially to research and teaching in the field of Chinese history. By supporting this professorship, the Tigillus Foundation further solidifies its commitment to HKU—an institution known for its rich heritage in Chinese Studies since 1927 and its role as a global hub for pioneering academic endeavours.

Professor Xu Guoqi, a world-renowned historian with a PhD from Harvard University, specialises in the intersections of Chinese and global history. His work encompasses Sino-foreign relations, war and diplomacy, and transnational movements of people, ideas, and cultures. Through his prolific publications and collaborative projects, Professor Xu has fostered crucial insights into how China’s past interacts with broader world histories — an outlook that resounds strongly with the Foundation’s mission to encourage cross-cultural dialogue and understanding through historical lenses.

The Endowed Professorship Presentation Ceremony took place on 28 February, 2025. “I hope to plant a seed for a brighter future and cultivate a legacy of innovation and enlightenment for future generations.” Speaking on his vision for the Professorship and the future of Chinese history education, Mr Chang remarks: “By fostering self-reliance and academic excellence, I envision a future where the brightest minds from near and far are drawn to a beacon of learning.” With this Endowed Professorship and our continued presence in philanthropic efforts, the Tigillus Foundation aspires to cultivate a new generation of scholars who shed insights into China’s historical narratives, ultimately benefiting students, communities, and humanity at large.
